SAE 0W-20 is the good choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change". So you can either trust your car manufacturer or the sales department .. your choice.
Gareth, our BMW Catalog Manager, explains the switch from 5w-30 (LL-01) to 0w-30 (LL-01FE) oil. The new 0w-30 "FE" product should better protect your engine on cold starts and offer increased fuel economy. If you're unfamiliar with engine oil designations, the first number "0w" defines how well the oil flows (viscosity) when cold.
These include 0w16 and 0W20 engine oils, which were invented in the 2000s. We recommend this engine oil to the owners who ride their vehicles in relatively colder areas and environments. The optimum temperature range for the 0W30 motor oil lies between -40°F/Celsius to 86°F / +30° Celsius. Which cars and engines should use 0W30 engine oil?
Also of note: Mobil 1's 0w20 is on the thick end of the 20 weight scale. Their 0w30 is on the thin end of the 30 weight scale. The functional difference between the two is actually tiny. Other brands may be different (ie. Redline's one of the thicker 30w oils).
0W20 here. Light tune + bolt ons. Blackstone oil analysis was perfect at 50k miles Weather in CA Bay area is mostly 40+ as well. I doubt the difference between 0W20 and 5W30 is a variance worth chasing in moderate climates (or at all from the other threads i've read..)
AMSOIL 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 synthetic motor oils are ALL 30 weight oils. The answer is that ANY one can be used regardless of the vehicle owners manual recommendation. To better understand, in a 5W-30 oil, the "W" stands for winter performance. In winter weather the 0W oil will flow like a 0W oil, and the 5W will flow like a 5W oil and a 10W
